The quintessential diver's watches, the Oyster Perpetual Submariner and the Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date embody the historic link between Rolex and the world of underwater exploration.

The design of the Submariner, an underwater survival tool, is entirely determined by the practical needs of divers. The model has evolved by incorporating elements that enhance its functionality.

With their 41 mm Oyster case, dial with oversized luminescent indexes and hands, unidirectional rotating bezel and Oyster bracelet, the Submariner and Submariner Date are among the most recognisable watches ever designed. A key element of their functionality, the high-tech ceramic graduated Cerachrom bezel disc contributes fully to their very strong identity. Its 60-minute graduation allows divers to accurately monitor their dive time.

The Oyster case of the Submariner and Submariner Date guarantees water-resistance to a depth of 300 metres. The Triplock crown, fitted with a triple water-resistant system, is screwed solidly into the case and guarantees total water-resistance.

Designed to be both robust and comfortable, the Oyster bracelet is equipped with an Oysterlock safety clasp that prevents any unintentional opening, and with the Rolex Glidelock extension system, which allows precise adjustment of the bracelet length without the need for any tools. The Submariner and Submariner Date are equipped with calibre 3230 and calibre 3235 respectively, self-winding mechanical movements entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Their architecture, the quality of their manufacture and their innovative features give them excellent performance in terms of precision and reliability. The power reserve of both movements is approximately 70 hours.

Like all Rolex watches, the Submariner and Submariner Date are Superlative Chronometer certified. This designation attests that each watch leaving the brand's workshops has successfully passed a series of tests carried out by Rolex in its in-house laboratories. The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolised by the green stamp and is accompanied by a five-year international guarantee.

Although the Submariner was conceived for underwater exploration and diving, fresh from the Rolex workshops, the watch was an immediate success and many deep-sea professionals put it to the test for the brand. One of these pioneers was Dimitri Rebikoff, a French engineer and underwater photographer.

In his 1953 report, Rebikoff wrote that the Submariner's performance during the tests had been extraordinary: «We can confirm that this watch has not only proved completely satisfactory under extremely harsh and particularly fatal diving conditions for the equipment used, but that it has also proved to be an indispensable aid to any scuba dive.
