Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller: Citizen of the Deep

Oyster Perpetual Sea-DwellerCITIZEN OF THE DEEP

Rolex created the Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller in 1967 to meet the challenge of prolonged underwater missions. The Sea-Dweller is specifically designed for saturation diving. Thanks to its helium valve, it can withstand decompression during ascent and control the return to the surface, the final phase of deep-sea exploration.

Guaranteed water-resistant to 610 meters when launched in 1967, then to 1220 meters since 1978, the SeaDweller combines all the attributes of the modern diving watch.

The Sea-Dweller, tested under real-world conditions as part of the Tektite program launched jointly with NASA, the US Navy and the US government in 1969, was used in the first major experiments with underwater habitats.

THE NEW FACE OF SCUBADIVING

In the 1960s, so-called "saturation" diving made it possible to stay at great depths for long periods. It consists of housing divers in a pressurization habitat, in order to reproduce the pressure that prevails in their underwater work environment. Thus, it is not necessary for them to undergo more than a single decompression process at the end of their mission.

This process may damage the watch. Divers breathe a mixture of gases composed mainly of helium, whose atoms are extremely fine and can penetrate the box. Back on the surface, the helium trapped inside can create a phenomenon of excess internal pressure responsible for compromising its integrity.

MASTER DECOMPRESSION WITH THE HELIUM RELEASE VALVE

To overcome this problem, Rolex In 1967, it introduced the SeaDweller, a diving watch with a helium valve. Screwed into the box, it consists of a hermetic cylinder, a piston and a spring that act as a safety valve. It opens automatically when the internal pressure of the case is too great, allowing helium atoms to be released.

A MULTIFUNCTIONAL READABILITY

Chromalight display, exclusive to Rolex, gives the SeaDweller optimal readability in any circumstance. The indexes, hands, chaton and bezel are hand-filled or covered with a luminescent material which, in the dark, has a blue emission color that remains up to twice as long as classic phosphorescent materials.

REINFORCED HERMETICITY

The Sea-Dweller is equipped with a Triplock winding crown. This screw-down crown was invented in 1970 and features three zones of water resistance. It reinforces the waterproofing of the Sea-Dweller's 43 mm Oyster case, whose case is made from a solid block of Oystersteel, an alloy that is especially resistant to corrosion.

THE CLOCK OF THE CITIZENS OF THE SEAS

Explorers and oceanographers, like Sylvia Earle, and underwater photographers, like David Doubilet, are committed to preserving the ocean and know it is our most precious resource. They wear a Sea-Dweller to reflect their passion and commitment.

Rolex It has also collaborated with Comex (Compagnie Maritime d'Expertises) since 1971. For several decades, the Sea-Dweller has equipped the divers of this French company specializing in engineering, technology and underwater intervention.
